Royal Mail Hotel

FacebookTweetLinkedInEmail

The Royal Mail Hotel, situated on Hungerford’s main street along the Dowling Track, is a classic outback pub within easy reach of Currawinya National Park.

Built in 1873 from corrugated iron transported over 200 km from NSW on bush tracks, this historic establishment remains in its original structure. Located near the border between QLD and NSW, it stands next to a gate in the rabbit-proof Dog/Dingo Barrier Fence, which allows passage between the states.

Originally a Cobb & Co staging post, the Royal Mail offered weary travellers and horses respite from the rugged outback conditions. Even renowned poet Henry Lawson stopped here for a drink. Today, it continues to be a hub for locals, travellers, and families, maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The Royal Mail offers accommodation, a dining area, a beer garden, and modern conveniences like Eftpos, fuel, and tourist information. It’s a perfect base for exploring Currawinya National Park.
