The ‘Copper Route’ takes you from the Pubs of Cobar through Canbelego to Nymagee, down to the Lachlan River at Euabalong, across to Mount Hope, and back to Cobar.
You’ll travel through some of Australia’s most ambitious and expectant copper and gold mining enterprises and the once-bustling settlements which grew up around them.
Visit ghost towns and all-but-abandoned localities, with a few refreshing stops along the way, and of course, historic old pub sites galore. Give some thought to an overnight trip and take in the hospitality at the villages along this route.
Nymagee and Mount Hope both have fascinating mining stories to tell, and it’s a feature of the Copper Route to visit these locations and think about the busy enterprises they once were, and the major townships they once hoped to be. Euabalong is an entirely different town, and one of the few reliable ‘river spots’ within the Cobar Shire, worth a trip for the shady gum trees alone.
Regardless of what it is that piques your interest, in Nymagee, Euabalong and Mount Hope, you are guaranteed a cool drink and a good meal.
Check out the farm stays and camping options available, including beautiful riverside camps on the Lachlan River near Euabalong, and don’t forget to take in some of the amazing stories that live in this memorable landscape.
For the less ambitious there’s also a ‘half loop’ option which can be completed in a few hours circling out to Nymagee and back to Cobar on a mixture of excellent gravel, and mostly sealed road.
