Club in the Scrub

Grawin

FacebookTweetLinkedInEmail

The Grawin Opal Fields are a loose assemblage of shacks, mines, camps and houses, held together by tracks, trails, mounds and used machinery… and the Club in The Scrub is no different.

According to anecdotal history, a few of the Grawin locals had a fall out with the local pub in the 1970s, and decided that they would start their own venue, And so, the Club in The Scrub was born.

‘A man called Peterson’ was one of the original builders and he had the vision of using the native pine logs that proliferate around the area to create a log-cabin style building. New members joined and chipped in as the construction grew, and pretty soon they had a rudimentary clubhouse with cheap beer!

Operating with eskies in lieu of fridges, the little building began to expand. Additional rooms were added, including a dining room, as the club grew in strength. As more money came in, the fridges and modern conveniences were added, and today the Club has all the features you would expect in a modern building, without losing that rustic, eclectic log-cabin charm.

Guests can expect warm fires in winter and air conditioning in summer, and an excellent kitchen and dining room serving meals seven days a week. There are pool tables, darts, plasma tvs and enough memorabilia and curios to keep you entertained for days. The club has eftpos and wifi, but thankfully, no pokies.

Run largely by volunteers, the Club in The Scrub is a real community hub. There’s plenty of camping in and around, and some times the golf course is open (not always) – but you will always find a few locals to yarn to, and learn about life in the opal fields.

Wherever there were changing stations, hotels soon followed, and the Wilby Wilby Hotel on the Narran, and the Grawin Hotel soon established themselves as watering holes, followed closely by the Comborah Hotel and the township of Cumborah.
