Gidgea Camp

Gidgea Camp Hotel

FacebookTweetLinkedInEmail

The remarkable Mrs Harrod raised three consecutive families in the pub she began out of a cellar excavated at Gidgea Camp, half a mile south of the bore on the eastern side of the road to Barringun.

A small ground tank typical of bush pubs marks the spot. It was the first stop for the Cobb and Co coaches heading north to Queensland.

The first family lived underground in the cellar until the hotel was built in 1879, accommodating both the family and travellers. Over the next 30 years, this determined female bush publican also held licences for three other pubs within an 80 km radius. The original pub closed before WW1. Only an ash heap buried beneath the sand remains.
