There’s always something special about entering a pub through those corner double doors that swing inward, it gives the whole experience a different sense of grandeur. The Great Western Hotel has that sort of entrance.
Once inside you will be in familiar settings, where a long L-shaped bar features an array of taps, with enticing coloured labels on the bottles in the fridges and on the shelves behind, along with friendly staff. Friendly locals too, and you’ll be dragged into a pub yarn before you even finish your order. With the various high tables and stools, the vintage tiling and wood panelling, and the old sash windows spilling light in from outside, you’ll be happy to stay a while and enjoy a chat.
Featuring what is thought to be the longest balcony in the Southern Hemisphere, the Great Western Hotel is an impressive pub with great history, and a great community presence. While the upstairs rooms and balcony are currently being prepared for refurbishment, and so are inaccessible, there are clean, comfortable rooms at the back of the building with private secure parking. The bistro provides excellent pub meals for both lunch & dinner (you can even get a coffee in the morning) and there are gaming and saloon rooms available for your convenience.
The say they have the cheapest and coldest beer in Cobar, and they may be right – a great place to stop and soak up some of the ambience of ‘Old Cobar’ while you take advantage of the 5G network, check your maps, and prepare for the next leg of the Pub Route.

Discover the history of the Great Western Hotel & The Pubs & Breweries of Cobar

The Great Western Hotel
Something must have been in the water in 1898. That was the year in which not one but two magnificent establishments were built in Cobar, the Grand and the Great Western Hotels.

The Pubs & Breweries of Cobar
Eighteen hotels are known to have existed in Cobar. Fortunately, they did not all exist at the same time as it may have been harder to get things done.
