Walgett

Walgett

FacebookTweetLinkedInEmail

Walgett is nestled near the meeting point of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers, one of the most significant river junctions in Western NSW. The town’s only roundabout marks the junction of the Kamilaroi and Castlereagh Highways, guiding eager outback adventurers through town and onto some of Australia’s best outback touring routes.

Considered the gateway to the nearby opal fields, Walgett offers delightful surprises for those willing to spend time getting to know the locals and their slice of bush paradise. Ask any shop owner how the yellow-belly are biting, and they might arrange to meet you on the riverbank after work.

If fishing isn’t your thing, enjoy a stroll along the 1.5 km Tracker Walford Walkway, which hugs the Namoi River and pays tribute to Aboriginal tracker Norman Walford. Visit the Walgett Water Tower to admire the mural celebrating local Aboriginal country music legend Jimmy Little. Recharge at the Walgett Bore Baths, or refuel at Stone’s Throw Cafe, a coffee and gift store selling homewares alongside lattes and long blacks.

Have some extra time? Drop by the Visitor Information Centre for local tips on what to do in the area and beyond. Pick up a map and a souvenir or two. The Centre showcases local artisans’ work, offering postcards, art, woodwork, and opal jewellery.

Visitor Information
Stones Throw Cafe
Stone’s Throw is a coffee-come-gift store situated in the heart of Walgett. Their mission is to be able to continually give back to the community of Walgett by providing a high level of service and range of products that often cannot be found in smaller remote towns, and to do so in a vibrant and engaging space.
Walgett Artesian Water Baths
Open Daily from 7am – 6pm The water in Walgett Bore Baths, naturally heated to a temperature of 38-40 degrees, comes from the Great Artesian Basin and is a great spot for a long soak. The water found in bore baths such as Lightning Ridge, Burren Junction and Walgett comes from the Great Artesian Basin and is approximately two million years old. Toilets and showers are available on site.
Walgett Water Tower – Jimmy Little Mural
The story behind this mural is the life of Jimmy Little. Image is based on a photograph by John Elliot. Zest Events International was commissioned by Walgett Shire Council to complete the mural. Jenny McCracken was artist that completed the portrait. Local professional Gamilaroi Artist Frank Wright has been involved in designing the background of the portrait, which includes a river system map of the area and local totems.
Norman Tracker Walford Walkway
The entrance to the Tracker Walford Walkway is on Warrena Street, east from the corner of Namoi Street. It was created by the Walford family so that walkers could enjoy the beautiful Namoi River. It is a favourite wedding location and extends for 1.5 kilometres along the river to the cattle crossing. Described in his obituary as ‘one of the last Aboriginal trackers’, Norman Walford’s career ended at Walgett in 1973 where he had been based for many years. He received a commendation from the Commissioner of Police for finding a man lost on Booka Booka Station, Brewarrina, at Christmas 1957.
